Saudi Arabian state-run mining company Maaden has awarded contracts totalling $274.7m for a mega aluminium complex in the country.

The contracts have been awarded to Germany's SMS Siemag and BWG Bergwerk, Austria's Ebner and the US's Wagstaff.

The integrated complex, which is owned by Maaden in joint-venture with Alcoa, will consist of a bauxite mine at Ba'aitha, an alumina refinery, an aluminium smelter and a rolling mill.

Maaden said the smelter and rolling mill are scheduled to start production by the end of 2013.
